Photos from Friday's live gig by Kraak en Smaak in the Abdijplein in Middelburg as part of the Nazomerfestival. Hels, Tom and I are so unspeakably cool that we travelled all the way there for this gig (ok, actually we were nearby on holiday) and it was utterly, utterly brilliant, quite the best live performance I've seen, ever. Period. It would be easy for a dance outfit to descend into techno-wizadry and not really give a good stage performance, but that wasn't the case here. Rose and Sebastiaan are not only excellent vocalists but have stage presence too, and the music for the K&S trio (plus added drums) was stunning, featuring tracks from both Boogie Angst and Plastic People plus an excellent cover of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" (1977? really? blimey). I was pogoing around like a loon - it's hard to dance in any other fashion when you have a three-and-a-half year old on your shoulders (who was also pogoing and VERY into the music). Grins all round.

I was there for the 25th anniversary celebrations, as a pupil. We didn't have name badges then.

A huge influence on so many people, myself included. Subconciously, I think I've modelled my cooking style on his (particular the wine-whilst-cooking idea, especially when entertaining). I feel the need for a dinner party to mark his passing.

Gavin Hewitt finally steps into Mark Mardell's shoes and takes on the BBC Europe editor's blog. Mardell's blog was excellent and insightful - he also "gets" blogging and understands that the strength comes from interaction with readers/commenters. Hewitt is a journalist of some repute although I'm not sure that he has the same easy jovial manner as his predecessor, something that I think served him well.
